Staten Island is separated from its neighbors by water, so bridges are part of any stay's logistics.

Staten Island is coextensive with Richmond County. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge links it to Brooklyn, and the Outerbridge Crossing, Goethals Bridge and Bayonne Bridge connect it to New Jersey. A trainer based in the city or the suburbs north of it means crossing at least one bridge. Ask about tolls, pickup and timing. General estimates for a stay run $1,500 to $2,500 or more.

On the island, the Staten Island Expressway carries most through traffic. Many dogs spend more time in cars than their owners realize, so a calm ride is a useful skill. If your dog gets anxious in a vehicle, mention it to the trainer well before the stay.

Parks are a strength here. The Greenbelt, a 2,800-acre system in the central hills, includes LaTourette Park and Willowbrook Park along with the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge. Walk there only where dogs are allowed, and check the posted rules.

Because a bridge lies between you and many trainers, handoff lessons deserve careful planning. Ask whether the trainer will come to you or expect you to travel. Pack the dog's usual food in a labeled bag, add any medication with written directions and keep a recent veterinary record on hand. A short checklist taped to the door the night before beats a rushed search on the morning of the trip.

Plan it in three stages.

  1. Choose your goals and list the questions you want answered.
  2. Ask each trainer how a dog from Staten Island would get there and back.
  3. After the stay, practice near LaTourette Park and Willowbrook Park in small steps.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Do bridge tolls add to the cost?

They can. Ask whether the trainer includes them.

Can a trainer visit Staten Island?

This site has no trainer list. Ask each trainer whether they cross the water.

Does a calm car ride matter?

Yes. Dogs who panic in cars make a stay harder.

Where can my dog walk afterward?

Parks in the Greenbelt are an option, subject to posted rules.
