Getting a dog off an island of towers and bridges takes more planning than most owners expect.

Manhattan is coextensive with New York County, and almost every dog here lives above street level. The first logistics question is simple: how does the dog get to the trainer? Some trainers pick up, some ask you to drive and some meet at a halfway point. Settle that before anything else, and ask whether a pickup fee is added. For the stay itself, plan on a general estimate of $1,500 to $2,500 or more.

Think about the walk to the elevator, too. A dog who pulls past neighbors or lunges at the door may be a handful on moving day. Practice a calm exit in the days before the trip, and keep the goodbye short so the dog does not feed on your nerves.

When your dog returns, fresh air matters. Fort Tryon Park and Inwood Hill Park sit at the northern end of the island, while Riverside Park and Hudson River Park run along the water. Central Park covers about 843 acres between the Upper West Side and Upper East Side. Check posted rules for dogs in each park, and start with quiet hours.

Broadway began as a trail running from Inwood to Battery Park, and it still cuts through the island with constant movement. That makes it a decent test of a dog's focus once the basics are solid, but save it for later, after the home routine is steady.

Plan it in three stages.

  1. Choose your goals and list the questions you want answered.
  2. Ask each trainer how a dog from Manhattan would get there and back.
  3. After the stay, practice near Fort Tryon Park, Inwood Hill Park and Riverside Park in small steps.
